How have zoos changed over time?

Zoos were traditionally thought of as exciting family day trips, but this was changed by increasing public disapproval of animal mistreatment and captivity. Zoo animals lived short lives with the psychological trauma of small, lonely cages that did not simulate natural conditions and animals were often uncomfortably surrounded by crowds of people.

To increase their popularity, zoos have begun to show increasing attention on animal treatment. Most zoos are now concerned with simulating or replicating the environment animals would usually live in, such as in the case of safari parks. While some poorly-managed zoos around the world continue to have low standards, others are going as far as to protect and conserve endangered species before releasing them into the wild. This, in combination with effective marketing, has lead to zoos regaining some of their lost popularity.
