[ history ]

Overview

Ferrets, like many other animals, come in a variety of colors and patterns:

Sable: Chocolate brown to dark brown-black coloring, often with a raccoon-like mask on the face. One of the more popular colors of ferret.

Albino: White color accompanied by a red/pink eye appearance. Both features arise from a lack of pigmentation.

Dark-Eyed White (DEW): White coloration, but eyes have pigmentation and generally appear black.

Champagne/Cinnamon: A golden color.

Silver: A combination of white fur with silver guard hairs. Can range from light silver to dark silver, depending on the number and shading of the guard hairs.

Mitt: A pattern of coloration in which the toes or whole foot is white.

Blaze: A pattern of coloration characterized by a thick white stripe on top of the head.

Panda: A pattern of coloration characterized by a white or light-colored head with a dark-colored body or "jacket." Typically, panda-patterned ferrets have a white bib on the chest as well.

These terms can be combined to describe the color and pattern of a ferret (i.e. sable mitt, silver blaze, etc.)
