On May 22nd, 1911, Germany (Kartell für das Deutsche Hundewesen en und Die Delegierten Kommission), Austria (Osterreichischer Kynologenverband), Belgium (Société Royale Saint-Hubert), France (Société Centrale Canine de France) and the Netherlands (Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland) joined together to form the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (F.C.I.)
As a result of World War I, the F.C.I. went into a hiatus and it was not until 1921 that France and Belgium resurrected the F.C.I. On April 10th, 1921 the F.C.I. received new articles and it was not until March 5th, 1968 they were awarded legal status by decree.
The F.C.I. organization consists of General Assembly, the Executive Committee and General Committee, the Compulsory Commissions (Standards, Scientific, Legal) and the Non-compulsory commissions.
The F.C.I. is generally known to be the World Canine Association/Organization. The headquarters of the F.C.I. is located in Belgium.
As off this writing there are 84 countries who are participating members of the F.C.I.
The F.C.I. makes and amends rules with respect to dog classifications, confirmations and any other dog judging events. There are 339 breeds of dogs that are now recognized by the F.C.I. Each participating country is responsible for breeds that originated in their country and in conjuction with the F.C.I. write the breed standard. The F.C.I. is responsible for gathering the breed standards, translating it and making sure that member countries are aware by which standards breeds are judged.
Participating countries falls under the jurisdiction of the FCI rules and regulations and each country is responsible for arranging World Championships, issuing their own pedigrees, training their own judges, issuing championship titles, and maintaining a compendium of breeders.
Championship results are sent to the F.C.I where records are maintained and or amended. Kennel owners and breeders can ask their home country association and the F.C.I. to protect their kennel names internationally.
The F.C.I. also maintains a list of judges which have been appointed by participating member countries.
