General Information

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a naturally occurring breed (i.e., not man-made or hybridized) whose origins can actually be traced back to Scandinavia where they were called “skogkatt” (“Forest Cat”). The cats recorded has having traveled with the Vikings on their journeys (to keep down the rat population) were in all probability these skogkatts. It is possible (although there is nor can there be any definite proof) that they are behind other longhaired native breeds.

Like many natural breeds, the Norwegian Forest Cat’s current appearance is a result of breeders actively working to preserve and refine the breed. Norwegian breeders in the first half of the 20th century realized that it was interbreeding with the free-roaming cats of the country and began a concerted effort to preserve the breed after World War II. Then in the 1970’s they began exporting the breed to breeders in the United States who worked hard to establish the breed there. It was recognized by CFA in 1987 and gained championship status in 1993.

Appearance

The Norwegian Forest Cat comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They have a long double coat that is water resistant, but unlike the Persian, it is not prone to matting. They do however, shed their coats every year, as they would in their native habitat. Their bodies are sturdy and heavy boned (again, reflecting their forest origins) Unlike the Maine Coon, they are not heavy and massive, but substantial and a moderate length. Their head shape is a series of long lines appearing triangular-shaped face on, and a long straight line from the tip of the nose to the forehead.
