General Information

The Devon Rex is noted for is curly coat and elfin appearance. Many observers (and breeders) lovingly refer to them as "aliens" or "ET" for this reason. Devons are very people-oriented and bond closely with their owners. Being alert, and inquisitive, they are a very active cat.

History

The original cat was a spontanious mutation found in a male cat in the care of a Miss Cox in Devonshire, England in 1959. He sired a son (later named Kirlee) on a domestic tortoiseshell-colored cat. Mr. Brian Stirling-Webb was working to develop what would later be known as the Cornish Rex cat and he mated Kirlee to several of his Cornish Rex. However, their offspring were straight-coated. This lead to the discovery that the rexing factor on each cat was on two different genes and the breeds were then developed independently of each other.

To maintain genetic diversity, they may currently outcross to American Shorthair or British Shorthair.

Appearance

The Devon Rex is a moderate-sized cat with a pixie-like face. The ears are very large and set low on the head. The cheekbones are prominent, eyes large, and its muzzle short.

The term "Rex" refers to the curly coat factor. This trait is also found in Cornish Rex (as well as in the Rex rabbit), but is caused by a completely different gene. Devon Rex have undercoat, awn and guard hairs (where the Cornish Rex lacks the guard hair). The coat length and density varies greatly among cats, with a denser coat preferred. Kittens rarely have as much coat as adults.
