General Information

Cats are good communicators through using body language. Their body language varies depending on their location and/or their situation. However, the body language of cats is often very subtle and can often be overlooked by humans.

The Cat is Relaxed

When most domestic cats are relaxed, happy and content with the situation around them - the following body language features are normally present:

  • The cat will voluntarily make eye contact with a human: they are showing a degree of trust.
  • The cat's tail is relaxed - normally in a downwards position.
  • The cat may have relaxed, slanted eyes.

The Cat is Protecting its Territory

The following body language features may be seen in a domestic cat if it is patrolling its territory:

  • Curiosity is shown by perked ears.
  • The cat's paws are planted confidently and firmly on the ground.
  • The tail may be raised for balance.

The Cat is Ready to Take Action

The following body language features can be seen in cats that are ready to jump at an object, whether to play with it or to attack it:

  • Its hind legs are bent - ready for the cat to jump.
  • Overall the cat's face shows a concentrated expression.
  • The cat's ears are directed forwards.
  • The cat indicates its confidence with smooth fur.
