Offroad vehicle drivers should only drive on the designated trail or roadway in that area and should not drive in areas where vehicle access is prohibited.
The United States Federal Government says drivers should:
- leave gates as they find them.
- yield the right of way to those passing or traveling uphill.
- carry a rake to restore areas where vehicles have had an impact on the ground and to rake out inappropriate 4 wheel drive tracks before they develop into new roads.
- assist in the management of public lands by reporting inappropriate behavior, natural resource damage or hazards they may encounter.
- respect the environment and other trail users by using common sense and common courtesy.
- wear safety equipment, such as helmets and gloves, and proper clothing and footwear, according to the terrain and season.
- stay sober and not drive while intoxicated.
- take some basic car repair tools and a shovel with them.
- bring along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cellphone or radio.
