Mushrooms have often been a thing of myth and legend. Sometimes they have been ascribed properties such as the ability to give those who consume it super-human strength, an ability to find lost objects, or to assist in spiritual journeys. In ancient Egypt, mushrooms were once considered the food of royalty; commoners were not allowed to touch them.
The cultivation of mushrooms probably began in the 17th century, in France. Special caves near Paris were set aside for the growing of various forms of mushrooms. Eventually, the production of mushrooms spread to England, and--in the 19th century--to the United States.
