General Information

Bicycling is a global recreational and sporting activity as well as a means of transportation throughout much of the world. There are an estimated billion bicycles in the world with 400 million bicycles in China alone.

Cycling consists of riding of a wheeled device without the use of mechanical motors. Propulsion is supplied by pedals that are cranked with the feet.

America's public lands offer a multitude of different types of cycling. However, licensing, fees and seasonal restrictions may vary from site to site and not all sites allow cycling. For detailed information on a particular site, contact that site directly.

History

Baron von Drais in Paris, France manufactured the first invention that had resemblance to a bicycle in 1817. Made entirely from wood, the cycle had a steerable front wheel. The rider straddled the two-wheel contraption with feet in contact with the ground. Propulsion of the cycle was powered by gliding the feet across the ground rather than using pedals. Although quicker than walking by foot, the contraption was limited to smooth terrain. Baron von Drais invention, the ‘Draisienne’, became the latest fad in France after its public exhibition on April 6, 1818.

In 1838, Kirkpatrick MacMillan of Scotland used his blacksmithing skills to produce the worlds first pedaled cycle that did not require the rider to touch the ground while in motion. He did not produce any bicycles other than for his personal use. In June of 1842, MacMillan traveled from his hometown of Coathill to Glasgow in two days on his machine. During the 68-mile trip, the local police authority fined MacMillan after causing injury to a young girl when she crossed his path.

Pierre Michaux, a French carriage manufacturer, was asked to fix a Draisienne in 1860. After experimenting with the machine, he concluded that he could build a better device. Michaux's invention included the addition of pedals on the front wheel. His device was a success and it was not long until he was mass-producing the cycles. This was the first mass produced bicycle that would allow the rider to move without the feet touching the ground.

The earliest bicycles were most often hard to ride and uncomfortable. They required a tremendous amount of lower body strength because of lack of gearing.

Rules and Guidelines

Cyclists can help to take good care of trails and roadways so that others may enjoy these areas for years to come by doing certain things whenever they cycle.

Firstly, avoid littering. Consider bringing along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting trash so that it can be deposited in the proper trash receptacle.

Secondly, follow guidelines. Make sure that you operate the correct type of cycle or bike permitted in that area. Check with your destination ahead of time to make ensure that the cycle you plan to use is allowed. Don't operate a bike or cycle in areas where they are not permitted. These areas have been declared "off limits" to bikes and cycles to protect wildlife, vegetation, or for your safety.

Thirdly, take safety precautions. Wearing protective gear, such as helmets, pads, gloves, and reflective clothing, may help avoid serious injuries. Being courteous can make it a safer cycling environment for everyone. Not operating your bike or cycle on unauthorized trails or roadways may help avoid dangerous cycling areas. Bringing along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cellphone or radio can also be helpful.
