Overview

The collecting of coins, especially coins that are no longer legal tender or currency, is a popular recreational activity and an important aspect of numismatics, or the study of coins, notes, medals and similar objects. The first known collections were during the Renaissance period in Italy, at some point during the seventeenth century.
