Auckland

Auckland is near the top of the North Island of New Zealand. It is actually four cities right next door to each other.

The southern part is called Manukau City, and it is where the Auckland Airport is. Every Saturday morning they have a market in Manukau where people come from all over Auckland. There are many different cultures at the market.

The western side is called Waitakere City. To the west of Waitakere City is a group of hills called the Waitakere Ranges, which is a wild area. On the other side of these is a popular beach called Piha where people surf.

On the northern side is North Shore. You can get to North Shore by crossing the Harbour Bridge, which is a huge bridge that goes over the Waitemata Harbour.

In the centre is a place called Auckland City, or sometimes called Auckland Central. This is where the Sky Tower is, which is the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere and one of the tallest towers in the world. There is also heaps of shops. There is the Auckland Museum and a large park called the Auckland Domain near by.

From Auckland City you can get a ferry ride to heaps of different places. You can go over to a suburb called Devenport on the other side of the Waitemata Harbour. You can also go to explore some of the islands out on the Hauraki Gulf, like Waiheke Island, Great Barrier Island and a volcano called Rangitoto Island.

There are two other volcanoes in Auckland called Mount Wellington and Mount Eden. If you drive up these you can get a good view and you can see the sea in both directions.
