Australia

Australia is a continent which is south of Asia between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Australia is also a country.

The most important event in the history of Australia is when Australia became independent of Britain on the 1st of January 1901. They still got on well with Britain and helped Britain in World War One and World War Two. In 1999 the grown-ups living in Australia were asked if they wanted to keep the British Queen as Head of State or have a president instead. They voted to keep the Queen as Head of State.

People Australia have been worrying about pollution and dirt in the air from all the factories. Because of the pollution the Ozone Layer, a layer of air in the sky that protects us from getting burnt in the sun, has been broken.

Some people are also worried about keeping areas near the sea or in the sea from being damaged by other people, like an amazing place called Great Barrier Reef. This is called conservation.
