British people invaded a place called the Cape of Good Hope in 1806, scaring away most of a Dutch group called the Boers. The area became wealthy after the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and gold in 1886. There was a war between the remaining Dutch Boers and the British people between 1899 and 1902 which the British won.
After this, a country called the Union of South Africa was started. The grown-ups who ruled this nation were not nice and made rules that gave people with white skin, who were British people, extra rights that people with black skin, who were natives, did not get. This was called apartheid.
During the decade of the 1990’s these rulers were stopped and with black skin people were given the same rights as people with white skin. Most of the people in the government in South Africa now are people with black skin.
