The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

It is a very important book for two reasons. Firstly, because it has been voted the best book of the century. Secondly, because a New Zealand movie director, Peter Jackson, is now making a series of three films on Lord of the Rings. It will be largely filmed in New Zealand.

The story begins in Hobbiton Village. Four of the main characters are Hobbits who live in this village. Their names are Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin.

Hobbits are small, friendly people who look very like men. There are other good characters like Gimli (a dwarf), Legolas, Galaedriel and Elrond (elves), Treebeard (an ent), Aragon, Faramir and Boromir (men) and a good wizard called Gandarf.

Their adventure starts when Frodo inherits a magic ring from his uncle, Bilbo. Bilbo is the main character in an earlier book called 'The Hobbit'. This ring not only makes people invisible, but it turns out to be one of the most powerful things in the world of Middle Earth, where this story is set.

Most of the badies are trying to get that ring off Frodo. The first badies they meet are the Black Riders, but there are plenty more, such as the Orcs, who are large, ugly creatures whose weapons are axes, swords, knives and spears.

Huge trolls and goblins who live in caves use swords and axes. There are also wolves, a giant cunning spider called Sherlob and bad wizards called Sarumon and Sauron. The most unnattractive baddie is Gollum, who is slimy and loves raw fish, but if hungry will eat worms.

If you read this book you have to be prepared to reade 1,009 pages.
