Carbon

Carbon is an element on the Periodic Table in science. There is carbon in many things, like charcoal, paper and graphite.

Carbon dioxide is what animals, including humans, make when we breath out, in a process called respiration. During the day time plants use carbon dioxide with water to make food in a process called photosynthesis. There is not very much carbon dioxide in the air, but even a fraction more (or less) could have a major impact on how we live!

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that comes from things like exhaust from cars or factories. You should always try to do your bit to make sure you don't make too much carbon monoxide by using public transport or riding a bicycle instead of travelling to places by car.
