A bird is an animal that has warm blood. They have lots of feathers so they stay warm and dry, especially when the whether is cold and it rains. Birds have two legs, like we do, but they have wings instead of arms.
All birds have wings, but not all birds can fly. Big heavy birds have lots of trouble flying, like the penguin, ostrich, cassoway and emu. There are also other birds that cannot fly, like the kiwi and the takahe in New Zealand.
All types of birds lay eggs, where baby birds develop. When the baby gets too big for the egg, they chip at the shell and the egg breaks or "hatches".
Birds that live in a nest have no feathers when they come out of an egg and they cannot see anything to start off with. Their parents must look after them for a couple of weeks until they can fly.
Birds that are born on the ground have some feathers when they come out and birds like ducks will learn to swim.
