Division

If you "divide by" in mathematics, you find out how many sets of a certain number can be found within another number. It is the opposite of multiplying.

Here are 15 apples. There are 5 groups of 3 apples here.

If we divide the 15 apples by 3 we get 5.

15 ÷ 3 = 5.

To prove that division is the opposite of multiplication you could reverse 15 ÷ 3 = 5 to make 3 x 5 = 15. You have ended up in the same place that you have started which proves that multiplication and division are opposites.
