Biological or Physical Anthropology

Biological anthropology is the study of how human bodies have changed over time. Scientists believe at one time our human relatives didn't speak and had very simple tools. Scientists study our distant relatives to see the changes that have happened. Biological anthropologists also study how modern people are different in various parts of the world.

Race

A race is a group of people that are rather alike to each other. There are three races in the world: Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid. Each of these different groups used to live in different parts of the world and never mixed, so that is why they exist and are different from each other. This was because it used to be difficult to travel very far.

  • Negroid. Negroid people are people from Africa. Their skin is very dark brown or black so it can protect them from the hot sun in Africa. They have tightly-curled black hair as well.
  • Mongoloid. Over three quarters of the world is Mongoloid. These people live mainly in Asia, but Native Americans and Eskimos are also Mongoloid people. They have straight black hair and an extra fold of skin above their eyes.
  • Caucasoid. Caucasoid people come from India, the Middle East and Europe. They can have pale (white), red (orange), brown or black hair. Their skin can be pale white if they live in a cold place or brown if they live in a warm place.
