Opium is a narcotic drug that people in poorer nations make from poppies in order to make money to live. It has been in use for hundreds of years and used to be smoked in Opium Dens. It is highly addictive and initially it makes people feel calm, relaxed and less likely to feel pain. They unforunately then find it difficult to live life without the drugs effects having once enjoyed it. Some people are more likely to become dependant on the drug than others and those that do spend considerable sums of money (often gained illegally to buy the drug).
Although it makes people feel good, it is not actually good for them.
Opium is the base component of many medically used drugs for pain relief in accident victims and cancer sufferers. When people are suffering real pain the use of these drugs is less likely to cause addiction.
