Instructions

Step 1
Think of some things you want to write about and list them on a piece of paper. Then decide which one you are most interested in. Let's go with a day at the theme park for this example.

Step 2
Come up with a start, middle and end. In the theme park story, your day might start with you traveling in the car to the theme park. You might go on a really scaring ride. At the end of the day you might wish you could do it all again next weekend.

Step 3
Choose the characters you want in the story and what each of the characters will be like. Don't have too many characters because it will get really confusing. In the example, you might be going to the theme park with your friend and your mom. You might be scared about going, your friend might be excited and your mom might not want you to go on the scary rides.

Step 4
Draw a mind map, flow chart or some sort of diagram or plan of what different bits you want to include in your story.

Characters - You; Your friend; Your mom

Trip there
-The busy traffic
-The yucky smell
-Finding a car park

The rides
-The roller coaster
--Really scary
--It was fun
-The log ride
--Very wet and soggy
--Not quite as fun as roller coast

Other things
-The food tasted yummy.

Step 5
Put these things you want to happen in your story into the order you want these things to happen in and make sure the most exciting thing that happens, or the climax, is near the end. The most exciting thing in the theme park story would be the roller coaster, because it was the most fun thing and it was very scary.

Step 6
Using the order you've chosen, plan roughly what each paragraph will contain. Then you can write about this thing in each paragraph.

Paragraph 1 – Introduction – Saying that you are going on a trip to a theme park and you are scared about going on the roller coaster.
Paragraph 2 – Describing the trip in the car to the theme park.
Paragraph 3 – Saying what the log ride was like.
Paragraph 4 – Describing if you like the food you had for lunch or not.
Paragraph 5 – Talking about getting ready to go on the roller coaster.
Paragraph 6 – Describing your ride on the roller coaster.
Paragraph 7 – Describing how you felt about going on the roller coaster and how you’d like to do it again next week.

Step 7
Go and write the story from what you have done on your plan. Use lots of different types of words and sentences of different lengths.

You should try to use:
-Adjectives – describing words
-Verbs – action words
-Adjverbs – words that describe things you do

Step 8
Go through and look for mistakes. Fix things if they don't make sense.

Step 9
Get a grown-up and friends to check it for you. Try to get your teacher and your mom or dad to check it if you can because grown-ups don't always pick up all the mistakes.

Step 10
Work on a good copy on the computer or on good paper.
