生物を対象とする自然科学。生物の多様性と、生物の営みをつかさどる生命現象を研究する。動物学、植物学、微生物学、解剖学、細胞学、発生学、生理学、生化学、分子生物学、遺伝学、生態学などから構成される。近年、工学との境界領域である遺伝子工学等のバイオテクノロジー、医学との境界領域である脳科学等が注目されている。
