言語学（linguistics）

人間のコミュニケーション手段のひとつである言語を体系的に研究する学問。ジェスチャー等の言語以外の手段や、サルやイルカの言語(?)等は、研究対象に含まない。明治時代には、博言学という訳語が用いられた。

個々の言語を解明し（音声、文法、語彙、語源等）、それを言語間で比較検討する（比較言語学）。また、言語と社会の関係の解明（社会言語学）、人間の認知活動における言語の役割の解明（認知言語学）等も研究されている。
