Die Inselgruppe ist vulkanischen Ursprungs und sehr gebirgig, wobei die Insel Tutuila mit etwa 85 km², die größte der 7 Inseln ist, dazu gehören auch die unbewohnten Koralleninseln Rose Island und Swains Island.
