pare: transitive verb

Origin: Middle English paren, from Old French parer, to prepare, trim, from Latin parre, to prepare.

1. To remove the outer covering or skin of with a knife or similar instrument.
2. To remove by or as if by cutting, clipping, or shaving.

General Information

Paring most often refers to removing the outer covering or skin on a fruit or vegetable. Although you can purchase special paring knives to make this job easier, it can generally be done with any small knife, or a potato peeler.
