Overview

Smell is the sensory perception of odor. This is mediated by chemical substances that interact with the olfactory cell fibers inside the nasal cavity. The cells consequently send neuronal signals to the memory and emotion centers of the brain. This explains how certain smells can evoke past memories or stimulate varied emotions. Since smell is also closely linked to taste, a loss of the former can lead to reduced taste perception.
