Overview

The geriatric population is the fastest growing demographic with the aging of the Baby Boomers. This portends to the increasing demand for specialized care that address the complex needs of the elderly. Unlike other age groups, older patients are more susceptible to disease and have a higher incidence of multiple problems. Many follow a regimen of multiple drugs, which must be carefully scrutinized for drug-to-drug interactions. They also have an array of problems that are not common in the younger generations. A few examples are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, osteoporosis, and unsteady gait. Common non-medical issues for the elderly also include various forms of health care (e.g., hospitalized, hospice, nursing home, home health), advanced directives, and health insurance.

Although the problems of the elderly patient may be complex, aging does not necessarily have to be depressing. Studies have identified groups of older people who still possess sharp minds and healthy bodies. One common denominator among these individuals has been their diligent care of their minds and bodies.
