Mental health concerns the psychologic, cognitive, and emotional well-being of an individual. Due to the great complexity of the brain and its processes, genetic and environmental influences play a large role in the development and function of the brain. A disturbance of this function can lead to mental disorders.
Much social stigma surrounds mental health issues, although advances in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and social welfare have gradually minimized the mystery and fear of mental disorders. Neuropharmacologic research has also helped explain the underlying bases of several disorders, while providing modern techniques to treat them.
