Characteristics and Traits

Both the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and its international counterpart, the ICD, maintain a "Personality Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)" category.

But they strongly disagree as to what should be covered by this catchall phrase. The ICD, for instance, relegates the DSM's Narcissistic Personality Disorder to this heap, insisting that it is not a full-fledged personality disorder.

Any personality-related dysfunction and distress that do not fit the specific personality disorders is NOS. Some people satisfy one or more diagnostic criteria of a few personality disorders ("mixed personality") - but do not run the full gamut of any of them. Personality disorders not yet recognized by the DSM Committee - e.g., depressive or passive-aggressive - are also NOS.
