Gonorrhea is a disease caused by infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The mode of transmission is usually by sexual contact and the time lapse between infection and manifestation of symptoms can last between 2-7 days. Symptoms can include painful urination, genital discharge, abdominal pain, and genital inflammation. Depending on the sexual practice, there can also be oropharyngeal infection. More serious forms of gonorrhea may include disseminated infection, skin lesions, and arthritis.
Neonates can also acquire the disease during birth from an infected mother.
