Ear Disorders

The ear is the sensory organ for hearing and balance. Because of this dual function, some disorders (e.g., Meniere's disease, vestibular schwannoma) can cause both hearing problems and dizziness.

The standard for normal hearing in humans, for instance, is the ability to detect sound between 0-20 dB (decibel) above a pre-defined reference sound pressure. A hearing level that exceeds this range is considered abnormal or diseased. Hearing loss can either be temporary or permanent, depending on the extent and type of damage to the cells associated with hearing.
