Leukemia arises from the abnormal proliferation of leukocytes in the bone marrow or blood. These diseases can be classified as acute (rapid) or chronic (long progressive). They are also subdivided into lymphocytic or myeloid types, depending on the cell type that is affected. Despite the overproduction of blood cells, a patient may oftentimes experience anemia due to improper maturation or programmed cell death (apoptosis) of cells.
