Hemolytic anemia is a class of anemias that result from elevated destruction of red blood cells. This may be associated with reduced erythropoeisis. The reduced hematocrit can lead to hypoxemia, while the release of cellular contents may lead to hemochromatosis and bilirubinemia.
Hemolytic anemia of the newborn (erythroblastosis fetalis) involves the reaction of an Rh- pregnant mother to a second Rh+ child. Sensitivity is developed from previous exposure to the Rh antigen in a pre-existing pregnancy.
