Playstation 2 first arrived on the shelves of Japanese retailers on March 4, 2000, and later appeared in shops throughout North America on the 26th of October the same year, following an official announcement from Sony Corporation. It met the huge demands of the summer holidays, and soon set new standards for home entertainment. Within just months over a million console units had been purchased throughout America, and many more were distributed around the world. Since the first appearance of Playstation 2, the price has dropped dramatically, and they continue to decline in value and become more common items in houses worldwide.
The success of Playstation 2 was the result of wider interactivity and tri-multimedia capabilities like no other game console prior. This has been achieved by using the latest computer technology. The 128-bit CPU has 32 MB of memory and processes 3.2 GB per second. There is also a 4MB Graphics Synthesizerâ„¢ with variable screen resolution, I/O Processor, a drive bay for 3.5" hard disk, network expansion capabilities, and capabilites to play DVDs and videos.
