Quoits is an English game which started around 1000 CE in poor rural mining areas with cheap excess metal. Sward Quarts is played on a lawn with two pins a suitable length apart, such as 19 metres for championship competition in England. Other games are played on a pitch with pins in soft clay at either end.
- The game involves two players. Each player throw two quoits from one pin to the other.
- The player who throws the quoit that is closest to the pin scores 1 point, or 2 points if both their quoits are closer to the pin than the other player's two quoits.
- Both players then go to the other pin and repeat, continuing until one player has reached 21 points and has won the game.
