Gameplay Phases

The following phases are used every turn:


  • Draw Phase: In this phase, the player draws a card.

  • Standby Phase: In this phase, various card related effects take place.

  • Main Phase 1: In this phase, the player may summon a monster, set traps and/or spells, or activate various card effects.

  • Battle Phase: In this phase, the player may attack their opponent and his monsters in order to reduce the opponent's life points.

  • Main Phase 2: This phase is identical to Main Phase 1.

  • End Phase: The player completes his turn and play passes to his opponent.

Card Types

Normal Monsters: These monsters have a standard attack and defense. Usually contains flavor text on the monster.

Effect Monsters: These monsters have effects besides their attack and defense. These monsters have effects ranging from drawing a card all the way to destruction of cards on the field of play.

Ritual Monsters: These monsters cand only be summoned by using the corresponding ritual spell card. The requirements must be fulfilled on the spell card to summon the monster.

Fusion Monsters: This monster can only be summoned by using polymerization and discarding/destroying the monsters stated on the card.

Spell Cards: These cards have an effect and are generally discarded. Some better known spells have powerful effects such as destroying all monsters. These cards can only be played during your turn.

Trap Cards: These cards can be played at any time, excluding your first turn. These can also have powerful effects.
