Library

This is your deck of cards, or draw pile. No one, including you can look at any of the cards in your library, until you draw or if you play a card with an ability to do so. You can, however, know how many cards are in each player's library. It's kept face-down, and the cards stay in the order they were in when you shuffled your deck at the beginning of the game.

Hand

As in most card-style games, this is where your cards go when you draw them from your library. No one except you can look at the cards in your hand, unless a card's ability says otherwise. Also, during your cleanup step, if you have more than seven cards in your hand, you must discard cards until you have seven.

In Play

This is the area in front of you where you put your permanents [a.k.a. the board.] You can arrange your permanents however you feel comfortable, but your opponent(s) must be able to see all of them and tell whether or not they are tapped. [Most players put their lands closest to them, then creatures and artifacts above the lands.]

Graveyard

This is your discard pile. All instant and sorcery spells go into your graveyard after they resolve off of the stack, [Unless they have an ability saying otherwise.] Other cards, such as permanents go into your graveyard when they're discarded, destroyed, buried, sacrificed, or put there by an effect. Your "dead" cards in your graveyard are always displayed face-up and can be viewed by anyone at anytime.

The Stack

One of the most important aspects of the game is The Stack. This area is where spells or abilities go when you play them, but, before they come into play on the board, or go into your graveyard. They wait there to resolve until both players are done playing things. Then, the spells or abilities on the stack resolve from top to bottom [the last spell or ability is on top.] The stack is used by all players. [More information on the stack is in the Advanced Rules category.]

Removed from the Game

When a spell or ability removes a card from the game, it is no longer playable in the current game. Although, there are spells and abilities that can bring back or "resurrect" cards that have been removed from the game. R-T-G cards are usually displayed face-up.
