What is Duplicate poker?

Duplicate poker is a skill game based on the rules of the cards game poker. As such, Duplicate poker can be played using the different types of poker rules such as: Texas Hold’em, Razz poker, Stud poker etc’. The reason it is called Duplicate is because each table of players is duplicated to other tables; each table has the same deck with the same shuffling, every player sitting at the table has a parallel player at the other table/s with the same hand.

The idea of the game is to win the most chips. The main difference from poker is that you actually compete with your parallel player/s on who wins more chips, and not against players sitting at your own table. Since the game is more about skill than about luck, it is legal in most of US states, 38 states to be exact.

Game play

The game is usually played online, because of the need to have exact same shuffling for each table, but there are records of live Duplicate poker tournaments. Duplicate poker rules involves a minimum of 4 players – 2 players at each table. At the beginning of each hand the players place their bets, each player can bet as many chips as he wants up to the maximum limit (there is a capped betting system).

You can play Duplicate poker at tournaments, sit & goes or at a quick play. In Tournaments the game is similar to a regular poker contest. there is no limit on the number of players or tables. It usually lasts an hour or more and it is pre scheduled. At the beginning of the contest there is a pot limit betting system, and after that – at the final round and the one before, it changes to a no-limit betting system. Every player begins the game with 10,000 chips but has a 1000 chip limit at each round. The rules are according to Texas Hold’em poker style.

Quick Play as suggested by its name - is faster. In quick play there are between 4 to 30 players (2-6 players at each table and up to 5 tables) and there is only one deal. The game usually lasts 10 minutes. The sit & go is a special round of 6 players, in which each player replaces once each and every one of the other players. This is also called the round robin, and this round determines the winner of the game.
