When Windows 1.0 was introduced in the mid-1980's, Microsoft began to catch up to the technology used by competitors. Since then, Windows has gone on to become the most dominant operating system for Personal Computers, with millions of copies sold.
Until October 2001, there were three basic branches of the Windows system.
- Branch 1
- Windows 95
- Windows 98
- Windows Millenium Edition
- Branch 2
- Microsoft Windows NT
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Branch 3
- Microsoft Compact Edition - for hand-held devices
Windows XP has arguably sealed the breach between Branch 1 (9x/ME)and Branch 2 (NT/2000), allowing further development into the future. Microsoft has also developed the Windows 2003 Server, which is Windows XP in 'classic' mode for use as a server, with editions such as Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter.
