Introduction:

When software is updated by a vendor or an open source project there is usually an announcement of some kind that is distributed via email. This is especially true if there is a security hole fixed in the release. These announcements are usually to a list serve specific for the software or to a general mailing list whose charter is to receive such messages(bugtraq or ntbugtraq are examples of this). If a decision is made to install a product at home or in an enterprise setting the vendors website should be reviewed for updates that might not be present on the installation media. In addition, subscribing to receive update announcements via email should also be pursued. Usually this information can be found in the tech support area of a site.
