History

Open-Site.org was founded in 2002 by Michael J. Flickinger in an effort to build a free categorized community-built encyclopedia, inspired by the DMOZ project. Vlad Dascalu and Ciaran Hamilton, who are root editors, also helped with initially starting the project.

Unlike other sites, such as Wikipedia, editors at Open-Site have to submit an application, which is reviewed by a senior editor at Open-Site. The whole rational of having an open "apply to edit" site is to reduce the possibility of abuse. Though an account is required to edit, anyone may submit content to the Open-Site project.

Throughout the years Open-Site has remained a steady, community-based project.
