Unless one uses web mail or AOL, it is usually necessary to install software for downloading email from the server. Some popular programs for this are Outlook Express, Netscape mail, Eudora and Foxmail etc. Outlook Express is built in to a Windows installation, but is probably out of date as installed and is better if updated.

AOL Email Client Software

AOL subscribers have a built-in GUI that provides for email. Behind the scenes, this interface actually uses standard protocols such as PoP3 and SMTP. Since AOL does not follow the RFCs that define how eletronic mail is to behave, users may experience problems when sending or receiving email with attachments, as well as emails formatted in HTML.

It is possible to use other mailers, such as Outlook Express while using AOL.
