Inktomi, is also a search product like FAST. It serves many sites including META search engines, PPC results and portals. The sites that use Inktomi are world leading companies like : MSN Web Search, HotBot, About, Overture, Position Tech and Kanoodle.
When launched Inktomi was said to have the largest web index of 1.3 million documents, but that changed of course. It was created by Eric Brewer, who was an assistant professors of computer science at University College of Berkeley and Paul Gauthier, who was a graduate student of the same college.
The project was initially funded by the U.S. government's Advanced Research Projects Agency, but it became a commercial organisation in early 1996 and soon after it gained its first major customer with the HotBot search engine.
Inktomi then became a commercial product. It then had its own highs and lows as losing the search partnership contract with Yahoo, AOL and Netscape Search. But in 2003 Inktomi, was acquired by Yahoo! World leading portals and now is a product of Yahoo.
Inktomi's index size is approaching three billion documents, which is comparable to AllTheWeb and Google.
People often refer to Inktomi as "INK", its NASDAQ.

Inktomi Web Map - Inktomi Web map is a link structure of the Web, made by Inktomi, when their spider "Slurp" visits a site, its automatically added into the Web Map, they claim to have a Web Map of 3.0 billion docs, but Web Map, makes no effect in the database, its something like PageRank, which effects the algo.
Best of the Web (BOW) - BOW is a database, which gives a site result a high rank in Inktomi's algorithm, it contains the database of the Web Map, to create a 500 million database of the Best of the Web.
GigaDoc - GigaDoc is basically a combination of the Best of the Web and the other one billion sites which haven't made into the BOW yet.
Paid Inclusion - Paid Inclusion is simple a service that Inktomi offers where users can pay to get included in the Inktomi Database with that they also get: 48 hour update and a automatic inclusion in all the Inktomi partners databases. (This is equivalent to the Best Of the Web)
