Yahoo started like a hobby of two students at the Stanford University. The two founders, David Filo and Jerry Yang, started in February 1994 to collect web links that appeared interesting to them, in order to have a central place from which to have easy access to interesting resources.
Soon the list got bigger and bigger and had to be split into topics. In some months, even the notion of topics wasn't enough in order to keep up with the growth of the list, and it had to be broken down into subtopics. The list became rapidly one of the most visited resources on the Internet, because it offered access to the information people were searching for.
The two founders saw the potential of the portal, and started to talk with investors about future development. Today, Yahoo! extends far beyond the initial purpose of a web directory. It includes email, online games, classifieds, news, sports results and several other services, making it one of the leading brands of the Internet community.
