Ribbon cable was, until very recent times, the main type of cable to link a hard drive and a floppy drive to the motherboard or other controller for such devices. It consists of many different individual cables linked together to form a type of ribbon.
Ribbon cable has been superseded in the last two years, although many more 'amateur' hardware enthusiasts will buy the cable to reduce cost. There is a much higher risk of failure in the cable, which was common in PCs up until about five years ago.
