Vector graphics, are the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and polygons, which are all based upon mathematical equations to represent images in computer graphics. Vector images will not lose quality through resizing.

Raster graphics, are data files or structures represented by a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color. Raster images will lose quality through resizing.

There are hundreds of data file formats that are used to represent graphics objects. JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), GIF (Graphic Interchange Format), BMP (bitmap) , PNG (Portable Network Graphics) are just a few and there are many more.
