Before the advent of computerized desktop publishing, producing high quality documents that integrated text and images seamlessly was the sole domain of print shops and printers. Desktop publishing is the field of computer usage that utilizes specialized high-power software that today runs on the average personal computer. This software is optimized, both algorithmically and via the user interface, to assist personal computer users in the tasks of document layout and design.
The line between word processing software and desktop publishing software has begun to blur, as word processors have added more and more high-end document handling features. However most word processors will not have the extensive features offered by a professional desktop publishing application, to handle many of the more advanced tasks required by a professional document publisher.
