Overview

A bulletin board system or BBS is any computer acting as a server that allows other computers to connect to it for the purpose of sharing information. Typical services provided by a bulletin board system are:

  • The storage and management of electronic messages which can be stored and retrieved by external computer users.
  • The storage and management of computer data files which can be uploaded and downloaded by computers users.
  • The operation of chat rooms where external users can interactively send text messages to each other.

Bulletin board systems predate the Internet and were the original source of computer inter-connectivity for computer users decades ago. They were, and some still are, typically accessed via a non-Internet direct phone connection to the server via a modem, although some have now been made available via Internet access.
