Overview

A bulletin board system or BBS is any computer acting as a server that allows other computers to connect to it for the purpose of sharing information. Typical services provided by a bulletin board system are:

  • The storage and management of electronic messages which can be stored and retrieved by external computer users.
  • The storage and management of computer data files which can be uploaded and downloaded by computers users.
  • The operation of chat rooms where external users can interactively send text messages to each other.

Bulletin board systems predate the Internet and were the original source of computer interconnectivity for computer users decades ago. They were, and some still are, typically accessed via a non-Internet direct phone connection to the server via a modem, although some have now been made available via Internet access.
