Overview

Cooperative businesses work in a similar way to limited-liability partnerships.

A producer cooperative business is owned and controlled by their workforce. A retail cooperative business is owned and controlled by their customers.

A main benefit of cooperative businesses is that conflict between stakeholders is unlikely - they are similar people. A problem however is that the main sources of finance are the owners' capital and retained profits - this makes it harder for cooperative businesses to expand.
