GNU is a recursive
acronym for "GNU's Not Unix".
The GNU project was launched
in 1983 by Richard
Stallman with
the goal of creating a complete free operating system: the GNU
system. The GNU project is now under the auspices of the Free
Software Foundation (FSF). This operating
system popularly known as "Linux" is actually a version of GNU using
the Linux kernel, and should therefore be called GNU/Linux. |

is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the
concept, you should think of ``free'' as in ``free speech,'' not as in
``free beer.''
GNU/Linux is an operating system with a difference.Linux is very
scalable and runs on variety of machines but of course some of its
features cannot be used on lower-end machines.A 486 machine is more
than sufficient for general purpose computing. |
