THE MOVIE TOP 5: Oscar Mistakes

One thing that could be said about the Academy Awards is that although it is a great honour for movies to be recognised with awards or nominations, it is not the best indicator of that film's success in economic terms. Here is the top 5 Best Picture films that were most outperformed economically by competitors in that year...
1. Chicago won in 2003 but didn't make nearly the US$920m that The Two Towers made in cinemas worldwide.

2. 2001 winner A Beautiful Mind made only about a third of the US$860m that The Fellowship of the Ring made in cinemas worldwide.

3. American Beauty didn't get near the US$920m that The Phantom Menace made.

4. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial did much better than 1982 Oscar winner Gandhi and was good enough to release again in 2002.

5. Armageddon made about twice as much as Oscar winner Shakespeare in Love which won in 1998 and made US$289m.
